problem with playing wmv format video file

when i try to play a .wmv format video ifle in movie player, it asks for codec . after searching for codec it reponds as no matching codec found. when i tr vlc, then jast vlc player opens and it does nothing. what is the alternate solution for playing these files

Medibuntu is answer to your question. Go ahead and try to visit medibuntu.org. The repository howto should answer other questions connected with codec problems in Ubuntu.

try to play it with totem xine backened or by gnome mplayer

It didn't work. I already have VLC player. The same file is well playing in windows.

Seems like it is not a problem with player, but with the codec. Try again installing medibuntu packages, they really shoud help you.

i have downloaded many movies of .mkv and .wmv formates .those are not supported what i have to do ?
