Firefox-3 unable to listen to BBC

Asked by lyn

I used to be able to listen to the BBC then several weeks ago I went to the BBC site to listen to one of their programs and I got the response 'Not Yet Supported' I had been listening the day before and and had no problems. then all of a sudden I couldn't listen anymore. I have Real Player and VLC and Helix player and still I get the same response - 'Not Yet Supported'
any assistance greatly appreciated because I miss the BBC. I am not in England (on their website they have different access for people in England and outside) I have Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Lyn,
On Ubuntu 8.04 I experienced the same issue with Firefox3, but with Firefox 2 or Opera I can listen to BBC radios.
Have you tried one of those browsers?
Regards,
Raffaello

I have ubuntu 8.04 and I am using firefox 3.0.8 to listen to the BBC (www.bbc.co.uk/radio/), so try firefox and tell us if it works or not.

thank you for your replies. I have firefox 3 which comes with Ubuntu 8.04. like I said in my post one day I was listening to the BBC and the next day I couldn't. I did not install or download anything so I am totally baffled as to what happened from one day to the next.

That could have been cause by a Firefox update.

To be sure that the issue is within your Firefox 3, please run the following command:

sudo apt-get install firefox-2

Once Firefox 2 is installed try listing to BBC radio.

Let me know.

I don't really want to go backwards and install firefox 2. isn't there some other way of getting around this problem?

I see.

Have you tried to clear your Firefox 3 cache?

Clear cache: "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network/ Offline Storage -> Clear Now" and clear any other private data you don't wish to save such as cookies and download history.

Another way to clear the "cache" is to navigate to :
/home/YouLogin/.mozilla/firefox/6h3sornz.default/Cache
Select all the contents and delete them, then reboot your computer and see if it works.

thank you all for your replies. if I clear that private data and cookies will that affect my web browsing or will it affect my computer in some way? and will it actually get me back onto the bbc? I am not very good with computers and if something really serious goes wrong I won't be able to fix it.

<<if I clear that private data and cookies will that affect my web browsing or will it affect my computer in some way?>>

If you clear your Firefox3 cache, you will not create any issue to your computer. It will just clear your private data and cookies.

<<and will it actually get me back onto the bbc?>>

It should, based on the fact you were able to listen to BBC before.

Kind regards,

Raffaello

As Raffaello said, that will not affect your web browse neither your computer, trust me on that, just try first to clean : /home/YouLogin/.mozilla/firefox/6h3sornz.default/Cache
then restart your computer and try to listen to the BBC.
If it doesn't work, so I am pretty sure that it's another problem.
Wish you good luck :)

hi Raffaello
I just followed you advice and Cleared the Data except the passwords, restarted the computer and still I can't listen to the BBC. I think I'll let it go right now and see if with some update that comes along things will change.
thank you for all your efforts to help. I really appreciate it.
thank you to Rached as well for all your efforts to assist.

No, you don't put that in a terminal, just go there, I mean navigat to the Cache folder, than delete all the contents then restart firefox and see if you can listen to BBC.

Good luck :)
