If you have at least one panel on the desktop, you may add with right click
- another panel
- window list
- window chooser
- workspace switcher

- if you have loose the bottom panel, create a new panel with right click on the existent panel and select "New panel"
- Right click on the just added panel and select "Add to panel" and add the applet "Workspace switcher" and/or "Window list" or "Task list" or similar....

for multifunctions on how to choose windows, you may take a look at Compiz.
It has e.g. group, tab, expo functions available through short cuts or mouse.
