Flash video does not function properly in Firefox (3.07) using Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Steve M

When attempting to run a flash video in Facebook, YouTube, or anywhere with FIrefox, the program attempts to load but freezes. I am using Firefox 3.07 under Ubuntu 8.10. I have also tried using Opera to view video and Opera runs flash video normally. Need to understand what needs to be done to allow FIrefox to run video properly. I appreciate any information which would remediate the problem.
Thank you.

What version of the flash plugin are you using? Please open a terminal (Accessoires->Terminal) and run this command:
dpkg -l|grep flash

Per your recommendation I ran the dpkg command from terminal and it reflected the following:
ii adobe-flashplugin 10.0.22.87-1 Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10
ii flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.22.87ubuntu1~intrepid1 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer

Hm, that looks up-to-date, although the version of adobe-flashplugin shipped with intrepid is marginally different: 10.0.22.87-2intrepid1
Is your system up-to-date? (launch System->UpdateManager, thenn press "Check" and "Install Updates")
If that didn't help, I'd try to reinstall the flashplugin. Open a terminal and:

sudo apt-get purge adobe-flashplugin flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

Ok..performed the steps mentioned after checking to assure my system is up to date. The purge and update steps appeared to execute normally however I received the following when attempting to do the re-install:
sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package adobe-flashplugin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package adobe-flashplugin has no installation candidate

Afterwards I tried running a flash video on Firefox, and the video would not load. Interesting now the same video when using Opera would not load either, which would make sense if the install did not complete properly.

abobe-flashplugin is not distributed by ubuntu, they call it flashplugin-nonfree. But I believe that's exactly the same contents.

I believe (but haven't checked) that adobe-flashplugin is available from the Adobe web site. Could you try to find it there.

Maybe installing the the same thing twice as part of different packages has created a mess.

Hm, I myself never used adobe-flashplugin, I always used flashplugin-nonfree directly.
Apparently you need to add this line to your /etc/apt/srouces.list:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu intrepid partner

But as far as I can see it doesn't make much more than just installing flashplugin-nonfree by itself, So you might also just do this instead:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

ok..just installed flashplugin-nonfree again and I tried running a flash video with Firefox and Opera. Same result as I had originally where the flash video would load but not display any video under Firefox, and the flash video would work normally under Opera. Wondering if the problem isn't something within Firefox 3.07 since Opera runs normally with the same plugin. I did not add the additional line deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu intrepid partner into /etc/apt/sources.list.

Cruncher is right. adobe-flushplugin is available from the ubuntu partner repository.

After you have added the repository and run sudo apt-get update, You might want to run apt-cache rdepends adobe-flashplugin to see which package requires it. (Note that it will list all available packages, not only your installed ones)

I have so far managed with flashplugin-nonfree only, too.

An I suppose you did reboot, before you concluded that flash did no longer work in your machine.

Remember the old Windows 3 life cycle (if you are old enough...): Restart - Reboot - Reinstall. Even if it's required only occasionally these days, that's still the right order ;)

Uwe..per your recommendation I ran sudo apt-get update, then ran apt-cache rdepends adobe-flashplugin and this step confirms flashplugin-nonfree. Also rebooted but didn't seem to make any difference. One thing I found curioous when I se the flassh video attempting to load in Firefox, if I right click on the video and go to About it shows SWFDEC 0.8.0, however if I do the same within Opera I see About Flash Payer 10. Wonder id SWFDEC needs to be removed to allow Adobe to execute.

Ah, good catch. I believe swfdec is a work in progress, so there might still be a few hiccups. I suggest to uninstall it, that should do the trick, assuming firefox will "fall back" to using the Adobe flashplayer instead.
sudo apt-get purge swfdec-mozilla

Cruncher...Uwe...Thank you both for your help. SWFDEC indeed was the problem. Once uninstalled Firefox reverted to the Adobe Flashplayer and everything works normally.

Thanks again!

Does not play at all or freezes? Is flash disabled within Firefox? And please open a terminal, enter this command (copy&paste):
dpkg -l | egrep -i "mozi|flash|swf"
And then copy all of the output and post it here.

It seems you also have a non-standard flashplayer plugin. I don't know "gnash", but maybe you should also try to remove it, since you have the Adobe plugin installed already anyway. So:
sudo aptitude purge mozilla-plugin-gnash

Restart firefox after that. If it still doesn't work, also purge the packages gnash and gnash-common.
