ssl error sll disabled

Asked by marlonS

Hallo,

after having had a update from Firefox and my "fortunate" or "unfortunate" break off - I cancled it - of a webbased bittorrent client my internet pages can not be shown because the system tells me I have a ssl error ssl disabled (and that I should start the package repair manager to solve the problem. I dont have the correct error message at hand now. I have tried that but it doesnt change the fact that I CANNOT BROWSE THE NET. I am not able to find where to enable my ssl protocol. and or what this protocol should be ( I think the reason why I broke off the instalation is the fact that it wanted to CHANGE this protocol - which I think it did...)

Please note: my internet connection works fine I can download from the net using torrent programmes BUT I cannot "surf" the net because of the ssl protocol.

So my question remains: how do I solve the problem? Re instalation? Magic within the repository ( what, how) or something different?

Thanks for your answer
MarlonS

Can you run as root "apt-get upgrade" and see if any error message happens ?

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

dear Macobra,
dear Christophe,

Thanks for your answers. before I try any of them let me share with you the copy and pasted messages I get. Please note again that every webpage with a security cannot be opened all other remain accesible...

Error writing settings file: /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.6/foxyproxy.xml. Ensure the path exists and that Firefox has write access, then restart Firefox. FoxyProxy will not function until then.

Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com:443.

Can't connect securely because the SSL protocol has been disabled.

(Error code: ssl_error_ssl_disabled)

Hi,

Foxyproxy itself shouldnt be the problem, I don't know if you are using it, but I would recommand you delete this addon for better troubleshooting.

then open again firefox and as URL type: 'about:config' (without quotes of course), then you enter filter 'ssl' and send us a screenshot of whats there.

anyway should do as suggested a fix of your packages with

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openssl

Seems this a foxyproxy issue as you can read here http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/faq.html#bugs
Please remove your foxyproxy extension... and retry...

Thank you

Or try to dress the issue using the Foxyproxy http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/faq.html#bugs seems there is a solution.

Christophe,

after having switched on my PC again the error message I get when starting Firefox is :

Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

Unfortunately I did not take a screenshot of the error message when trying to get on to a "secure" site (e mail, bank etc) but I know that the system didnt recognize the certificate......

Ok, looks you like your firefox profile could have been screwed up in the process or something really bad happened when you failed to update your system for the first time.

Unfortunatly I can't be physically in front of your screen to do more checks and fix your problem. I would need SSH access to your machine, unless someone has better idea.

Last resort is a reinstall of your PC :/

Christophe,
I think you are right and that reinstall may be the best solution.

Please answer this following question: When reinstalling should I leave a windows operated area ( do I need to keep Windows (as double boot) on the PC? And must I partition the drive if I ONLY have Ubuntu running.......
