Hi,
did you update some addons, it might conflict with 'ubufox' addon, try deactivating this and restart firefox.
To get some output what's wrong start firefox in a terminal:
firefox

Worst case, rename .mozilla folder (hidden in your home directory). Backup your bookmarks before, addons will be gone.
Description:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Linux_and_Unix

M$ habit, reinstallation.

Could it be that you've started firefox with administration privileges once?
If, that wasn't a good idea.
In case to retrieve user permissions for the firefox profile, type in a terminal:
sudo chown your_username -R ~/.mozilla/firefox/
password for ray hughes: ##you wont see anything when you type

##Note: Commands are case sensitive.

Restart firefox and make your desired configuration, restart it again and it should come up with the changes.
