open Firefox and typing about:plugins in the address bar and check for java plugin , if not found .

Make a symbolic link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in your Mozilla Plugins directory. Use the copy located in the plugin/i386/ns7 directory of JRE 5.0 or later, or plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32 if you are using JRE 1.4.2.

If you execute this from a terminal (Accessories->Terminal):

$ java -version

My output was:

java version "1.6.0_10"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode)

I checked the about:plugins and it said I had "IcedTea Web Browser Plugin" installed. This was installed with the "icedtea6-plugin" package I believe.

Open a terminal and type in:

sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin
or
sudo aptitude install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-plugin

this will install the plugin :)

Hi,
I am experiencing the same problem eventhough "sun java jre" and "sun java plugin" softwares are already installed in ubuntu.
I checked that java is enabled within Firefox alse it is shown as installed in the plugins section.
Could you please help me if you can ?
Thanks.

I closed and reopened the Firefox and the java plugin started working.
I have no idea why the above error occured.
I must have something to do with Canada government webpages.
