no matter what I do, totem plays always any realplayer content

Asked by Stefan

I installed Ubuntu 8.10, firefox version 3.0.5. I installed Realplayer11Gold from deb package. I opened and configured Realplayer. When opening a realplayer audio from amazon.de website, I get the prompt "Open with: /opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay (default)". I click on OK. But Totem movie player opens and dispays error message "the stream is in the wrong format". I go to edit - preferences - applications but cannot find there the rm audio content type. (note: when saving the content of the link, it is a small rm file). However, some content like MPGA file is displayed with a realplayer content symbol. I go to tools - addons, and I find REalPlayer G2 plugin compatible version build Oct 1 2008.

I tried almost everything - even uninstalling totem. I reinstalled realplayer. Removing totem plugins is not enough, need to remove completely gstrem (movieplayer) so that it does not pop up when wanting to play the rm file from amazon. Now gstreamer is completely removed, and when wanting to open rm content link with /opt/real/RrealPlayer/realplay (default), I get an error message and it is not played.

Please please, can someone help me? it has taken me already a lot of time and searching in help forums, and it is for me a KO criteria for ubuntu...

Thanks in advance to whomever can contribute... Regards, Stefan

Hi, Stefan

As , you can see, your browser is still bound to Totem 2.24.3 plugin , so try this :

sudo apt-get remove totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin

sudo apt-get remove totem-mozilla

Restart the browser see the effect.

Hope it helps :)

Thanks for your advise. As there is still the same issue, I will tell you what I did:

I executed both apt-get remove commands. The first one, answer was could not find package totem gstreamer firefox plugin.

The second one, OK, removal was done.

I re-installed realplayer version 11 from the .bin file, opened it to finalize its installation. Done, OK, was redirected to realplayer homepage with the message that its OK that I have the latest version.

Then I went to amazon.de and clicked on a realplayer icon content (a song). I got a pop up window asking me if I want to start with movie player, or other. I chose other, where I was able to select /opt/real/realplayer. I selected, but then totem popped up and said "stream in wrong format".

So I went through the deletion routine a second time just in case (here the copy paste from the terminal window).

stefan@schugut:~$ sudo apt-get remove totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin
[sudo] password for stefan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin
stefan@schugut:~$
stefan@schugut:~$ sudo apt-get remove totem-mozilla
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package totem-mozilla is not installed, so not removed
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.27-7 linux-headers-2.6.27-7-generic
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
stefan@schugut:~$

I again re-booted the system, opened the browser, and have here the result from about:plugins.

Again, I click on a song, a pop up window appears and says:

you have chosen to open 01.02.rm
which is a RM file
Open with: opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay (default)

I click on OK, the totem player pops ups with the error message the stream is in the wrong format.

So, as I know Opera from the past, I installed Opera version 9.6. (the latest).

I go to amazon.de, click on a song, and a pop up window saying

downloading file 01.02.ram (yes, ram, not rm)
type Real Audio Document
and I get the choice to open with movie player, or realplayer11.

I chose realplayer, it actually pops up, but I get the following error message:

The content you are trying to play uses an audio codec (DNET) that is obsolete and no longer supported. Please contact the content provider about using a supported codec.

So, again, it cannot be played.

2 things puzzle me:

my first Ubuntu installation I did in 64 bit about 1 month ago, installed also realplayer, and was able to listen to all songs I wanted on amazon!! (I moved 2 weeks ago to 32 bit version as some third party software I want is only available as x386).

second, the same song on amazon, under windows with opera 9.6, with realplayer version 11, plays without any issue (no error messages, latest screens, etc.)

A long story, I do not know if you had the time to reach this end, if yes, perhaps you may have a comment to share.

I have to say that I very highly appreciate to communicate with someone, with you, about this, and hope to hear from you again.

Best regards, Stefan

Dear Hemanth,

great, your proposal solved the problem !! I do not need real player, I only need to listen to the music samples on amazon.

This I can do now with the plugins you indicated.

Thanks a lot for your patience and friendly support.

All the best and kind regards,

Stefan
