logged out of gnome while scrolling down in firefox

Asked by molsh

My wife complains that occasionally the PC "goes to the logon screen" while scrolling down in firefox with th mouse wheel.
This is the web page she was using: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=08e12b1f-deec-4978-9930-a91d6bf18f5a (it includes google maps)

I asked her to note the occurrence time next time it happened & she has noted 9:37 yesterday (6th jan).

This problem started a few weeks back. Prior to that the system was stable.
The problem is intermittent & not-reproducible on demand.

I've been regularly applying the recommended updates. I assume one of the recent ones introduced this problem.

I looked in the logs, but am inexperienced & don't know what to look for.
I ran the memory test from grub. It reported no errors.

Also: is there some general guidance for investigating this kind of problem?

Thats very odd, id be very curious what prompted Jan 6 09:56:01 amd2 syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart.

If its only doing it in firefox i would be looking for a few log files to tail to see if i could catch some odd escaping error

the 1ubuntu1: restart is probably unrelated given it 20 minutes later.

Molsh,

slideshow and gnome-screensaver both give "SegFault" and "General Protection Error"

SegFault= Segmentation Fault, a process tries to read in a part (of the memory/HDisk) that is not of that process...
Gen.Prot.Error= you/a-process tries to do something that is not allowed...

Few things to investigate for you:

? Are the standard rights of directories and standard-files in HER home-directory the same as yours ? (command:
  ls -ail /home/myself/ /home/mywife/
look at all directories and files starting with a dot .)

? you do not state it here, we assume YOU do not have that problem ?

? Is it depending on what she did on the PC BEFORE she scrolls down in FireFox ? Is it only at certain websites ?

? Do you have Disk-Quota ON, or is the entire HDisk available for both of you ? What is the free Disk space ? (command:
   df -H
the -H is to make it in Human-measures Mb/Gb)

Hope you will find out something more to clear tis problem.

Looking at these two lines:
Jan 15 14:49:47 amd2 kernel: [ 105.782121] gnome-screensav[5725]: segfault at 00000000 eip b77fbd63 esp bfe829e0 error 6

I think something might be up with your disk/ram. From what I remember segfaults can also be caused when the data it looks for is garbled/corrupted.

The commands Molsh gave should give a solid idea of whats happening.

Hi there,
Sorry about taking so long - just back from vacation.
That linux system(host AMD2) is so unstable now, I've resorted to using the kids windows PC to fill out this web page. This is my fourth attempt to respond tonight. I've had it crash or hang at least 8 times tonight. more to come...

Molsh,

slideshow and gnome-screensaver both give "SegFault" and "General Protection Error"

(command:
  ls -ail /home/myself/ /home/mywife/
look at all directories and files starting with a dot .)
helen@amd2:~$ ls -ail /home/murray/ /home/helen/

? you do not state it here, we assume YOU do not have that problem ?
Not yet while I'm signed on as murray - but then I rarely do.

? Is it depending on what she did on the PC BEFORE she scrolls down in FireFox ? Is it only at certain websites ?
Weeks ago the problem only happened in firefox. Today it has happened in firefox and evolution.
It happened to me while logged in as helen tonight. In firefox & evolution: various symptoms: gnmome retsrting, app dissapearing, or screen freeze.

? Do you have Disk-Quota ON, or is the entire HDisk available for both of you ? What is the free Disk space ? (command:
df -H
the -H is to make it in Human-measures Mb/Gb)
helen@amd2:~$ df -H

If you can sign in as another user then you probably have some other problem with configuration settings.

If this is the case I would suggest you move all the .<folder> entries to a sub folder then try to log in. The applications should recreate the entries as they are run.

Does the system logs show an application error for when firefox shuts down?

Does the system just go dead, or run through the shutdown procedure?

Has the machine been through a dist upgrade? (ie Hardy to Intrepid)

I can sign on as another user, but get the same kind of problems.

tonight the symptoms include getting logged off (gnome restart) & screen hangs (these require PS reboot) and firefox just disappearing.

Yes. Orig install was 7.10(i think) on a smaller disk. upgraded this to 8. then copied the boot disk to the one its on now. then it was stable for many months inc whever update ubuntu recomented.

The only thing I find in the logs for a case where firefix closed was this:
Feb 2 21:53:24 amd2 NetworkManager: <info> Updating allowed wireless network lists.
Feb 2 21:53:24 amd2 NetworkManager: <WARN> nm_dbus_get_networks_cb(): error received: org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks - There are no wireless networks stored..

In the cases where the screen hangs, its does not go through the shutdown procedure.
What is on the screen at the time stays there, it is just unresponsive. tried ctrl-alt-f1 - no response.

i ran the memory test from grub.
it showed memory errors. I assume that is the cause of the problems.
i'll replace the memory.
