download problems

I have a problem with downloading files:

When I click on a file to download the little window that asks me what I want to do with the file, shows up.

Then if I select the option "Open file", everything works fine.. But if I select "Save to hard disk" and press the OK-button, nothing happens. The download manager doesn't even show up..

Also, when I go to Edit > Preferences, I can't configure the default "download to" dir ...

I guess this has to do with the same problem but I can't seem to figure out what's wrong..

Can someone help me with this?

If you are using Firefox, choose edit, preferences, main, down loads click on the folder you want to save in.
If you do not have this ability, reinstall your browser

Hi,
the download_to_directory probably doesn't exist anymore.
Or you moved your profile?

Try this, type in the url bar:
about:config ##without any space and hit enter

then in the filter bar type or copy&paste:
browser.download.

reset the following lines with right click:
browser.download.lastDir
browser.download.downloadDir
browser.download.defaultFolder

Close and restart Firefox, try again to save a file.

If the saving of a file doesn't work in other apps also, e.g. Gedit, OpenOffice, Gimp
try this option:
rename the file .gtk-bookmarks (hidden in your home directory) e.g. .gtk-bookmarks.broken

this is what i get for every download from the archive manager
