Youtube videos stop after exactly 8 seconds?

Asked by george_rutkay

My son noticed this today and it's only a very recent issue (within the last 24 hours) since he and I were using Youtube before and no problems were observed.

I noticed that any given video will start to load and begin to play normally, then after exactly 8 seconds on the video counter, the video stops playing, the progress widget resets to 0 seconds and the download bar stops all progress.

This doesn't affect other flash media such as you would find on myspace.com for example. It's only affecting Youtube videos.

In trying to account for this change, the system has had no updates recently as far as I know and no malfunctions either.

I wonder why exactly 8 seconds? What is this malfunction and it's timing indicative of?

No, nothing at all. I'm not playing music or anything, it's just Firefox (3.05) running. I have the latest flash software installed, I downloaded it from Adobe and installed it as root user.

The video quality and everything is completely normal. But it just predictably quits playing whatever video at exactly 8 seconds and resets the play-progress widget back to 0 seconds.

If I want the video to continue, I have to click on the progress bar from where it last left off, then the video will continue but only for another 8 seconds, then stop and return to zero.

Solved - I ended up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the system. This was quickly becoming a darned career change and this plus the problem with being unable to add new bookmarks made the decision easy for me.
