can't view images on websites in firefox 3 with ubuntu
just installed ubuntu 8.4, which came with ff3, did updates once online, but can't see any images thumbnails on websites and also can't view the graphics associated with my igoogle homepage.
have tried installing the plugin that automatically came up for adobe flash, which kept coming up even after I installed it until I went into the terminal to install it, but still can't view any images. I have also already checked to make sure images are not blocked on ff3 and have checked to make sure that the about:config details are set properly as detailed in other forums regarding this issue. I have been working on it for nearly 24 hours now and am frustrated at not being able to find a fix...please help, I am a newbie to ubuntu and hope someone here has an answer that will solve this problem.
in addition I am also finding that ff3 will not load some websites at all instead giving me an "address not found/server not found" message, this happened when I tried to download adobe flash from the adobe website and when I tried to access mozilla firefox website as well. I don't know if the two problems are linked, or not, I have also attempted to fix this problem with no success so if you know how to resolve this also...well that would be just swell. I really thought ubuntu was going to be easier than this to use...I am kinda disappointed, but always up to increase my tech know how...so I hope you can help me.
Thanks

I can read images without any issue...
So please... try to clean your Firefox profile....
Clean firefox mozilla profile
Close all opened Firefox and try to delete your Firefox user setting open a terminal from applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
mv .mozilla .mozilla_old
and restart Firefox.
If you have a lot of bookmarks please export them before move your setting directory, then import them again from saved file into Firefox.
Also take note of your installed Firefox extensions, to reinstall them.
if this works then delete the .mozilla_old directory, from terminal, type:
rm -fr .mozilla_old
hope this helps

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

so far as I can tell the system is fully upgraded and updated. you did not say if firefox should be closed first. before performing this action, so we left it open in order to have access to the list you provided.
We put all the commands listed into the terminal as you listed them. some went right through, others gave a failed to fetch message and said we should do apt-get-update, but we went on with your list as instructed since you did not address any of the messages we might encounter.
Still the igoogle theme does not show and neither do the images on the second website we gave you earlier.
So should we have closed firefox before entering the list you gave us? would that have resulted in the failed to fetch messages we got?
or is there something else we should try? any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
we have included the terminal text from what we did below if that helps you in any way to help us.

Please forgive my intrusion marcobra.
I too can access both those sites without any problem as long as I give permission to allow scripts in Firefox.
In Galeon (another browser without a script blocker) both sites display normally.
So, if you have the "No Script" add-on installed you need to change permission via the No Script icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
You might also check your settings in FF, go to Edit, Preferences, Content and ensure that there is a tick next to the four options, especially "Load Images Automatically".
Ubuntu is indeed easy to use but at the moment everything probably seems very unfamiliar to you. Hang in there - it is worth it.

Now i want to verify why Roger's pc can't fetch the updates from main site... i'm thinking about a transient or a DNS issue...

I'm just curious, did I say something wrong or is someone trying to figure this problem out and just hasn't figured it out or has this problem stump you? I'd just like to know where this issue stands. I do appreciate any help in this matter.
It seems now the first link I provided at least from my ubuntu system, I'm not even taken to their standard home page, I just get a list of the links on their home page.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Just to satisfy your curiosity: No, you did not do anything wrong. The people that answer questions here are Linux users of varying degrees of expertise who give up their free time to help others. They also have to attend to the chores of daily living as well as living in different parts of the world and therefore in different time zones.
From the above postings I see that Firefox has been removed from your system and has been re-installed.
Is your update manager working? Check by going to System, Administration, Update Manager and left click on "Check".
I would also install Galeon, another browser to see if it also cannot display the URLs you want to access. To do that, go to Applications, Add/Remove, locate Galeon, place a tick next to it and click on "Apply Changes".

Re Galeon- that may be because "show all available applications" was not selected.

Although I would gladly answer all your questions, you need to pose these separately - that is how this system works.

First try this:
Network problem Open dns
Please try to ping your router ip address...?
please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
ping 192.168.1.1
if you get an answer from your router then i think that is only a DNS issue
sudo gedit /etc/dhcp3/
give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
Change the prepend line to read:
prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220;
save and exit and restart your newortk:
sudo /etc/init.
if this doesn't solve please try this:
-------
Ubuntu 8.10 DNS dont' works
If you can open the page http://
Migth be related to this bug https:/
As a workaround please try to set OpenDns dns server https:/
into your resolv.conf and lock it:
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)
sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf
add this rows as first DNS server (you can also put your provider DNS instead of OpenDNS servers)
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
save and exit
Then to avoid other modification from other program, lock your resolv.conf, still sing terminal type:
sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf
Then try... if still this doesn't works please reboot your pc, and try again.
Hope this helps

marcobra - ok, did the ping thing, but you didn't define the answer I should expect from my router so I don't know whether or not I got the right answer from my router......it did something and then kept doing over and over again counting up to over 500 when I finally closed the window, please clarify the answer I would expect to get from my router if I perform the ping.
Next I did the sudo getit you provided, and the prepend and the restart network command as you suggested, still has not resolved this issue.
So....you said to see if the two pages you provided would load, they both did, so now what? Since you said if one loaded and the other didn't it would seem to be a DNS issue.
So I don't know where to go from this point. A couple of notes: yesterday my google loaded fine with theme graphics and today it does not. Also, fyi......the ethernet card that had to be installed is designed for windows compatibility, however the seller did say he thought it would work just fine on Ubuntu.....when the internet installer was here he just installed the ethernet and then connected the router to verify that it had connection however, we did not run the cd that accompanied the ethernet hardware......as the internet installer said there should be no reason to. Would this be a cause for the problems I am having?
Also I looked at the "bug" link you provided, but couldn't make sense of the info there so didn't know what else to do with it. I also went through the "work around" you suggested, however, it would not accept my username and password, so I am stuck as to what to do from this point in regards to that as well.
Andre - I checked the Software Source, as you suggested, it was on main source, and I changed it to Unites States and it downloaded packages and then disappeared.
So I put it back to "Main Server" and it did the same thing. Not sure what that means or where to go from here.
Thanks again to both of you for your continued patience and help.....and other suggestions would be appreciated.

In Software Sources, the window for "Download from" gives you several options such as "Main Server", "Server for Australia (in my case)", the mirror that I use (provided by my ISP) and "Other".
When you click on "Other", you are presented with the option of selecting a server in the country where you live - perhaps your ISP operates a mirror.

I know that I have a 32bit system, but the ubuntu software... I really don't know because it came without any paper work other than the cardboard sleeve that it came in, and the information on that doesn't say if its for a 32 or 64 bit system. I've also gone to the ubuntu web site and couldn't find anything that would tell me if the software I received is for a 32 or 64 bit system.
All i found was this: ubuntu is available for PC, 64-bit PC and intel based mac architectures.
Well, thanks for your help anyway, maybe you can tell me how to uninstall ubuntu and reinstall my windows98. I've been unable to do so myself.

If you are going to re-install anything why not re-install Ubuntu? Obviously something went awry with the initial installation.
Place your CD into your machine, reboot to load Ubuntu Live. Try Firefox. It will be a bit slower than a proper installation but you will be able to establish that it does work.
Then choose if you want to install. ... but this time be careful as to what you download from sources other than what is available through the sanctioned Ubuntu channels.
Regarding Windows 98, do you really want to install a ten-year-old operating system?
Revision history for this message
|
#28 |
Andre,
This is the second time I have reinstalled Ubuntu, so obviously something continues to go awry with the installation.
Also, I have not downloaded anything other than the updates that came up automatically once installation was complete. I presume these automatic updates are through sanctioned Ubuntu channels. I didn't change anything other than the instructions that have been given to me here.
Finally, I would rather have a ten year old operating system that "operates" than Ubuntu that obviously does not! I need to be able to view images, sometimes I can, most of the time I can't....Ubuntu seems finicky at best and impossible at worst, I am left wondering why this operating system was released, when it has these *bugs* or whatever you want to call them, still in it. I was under the impression that this would be an "install and go" experience, however, the reality seems far from that.
I followed all the installation instructions to a "T".....I don't think this operating system is a good choice for those who are new to Ubuntu and have little or no experience in advanced tech support.
Until Ubuntu has resolved these bugs, I have little choice but to revert back to my windows 98 if I want any functionality at all, firefox simply does not seem to want to function for me. I find it hard to believe that no one else has experienced these or similar problems after installing Ubuntu.....but I have looked everywhere I could think of online and my issues seem unique. If you here at this community cannot assist me in resolving these bugs so that Ubuntu/firefox will function properly on my machine then I have no other choice but to either *pay* for tech support, which is out of the question on my budget or go back to windows 98 for now. I really would rather keep Ubuntu, and my partner was going to install it on her machine too, along side her windows xp, but dares not to now based on my experiences already, since she works online and depends on her machine functioning properly for her income she can not risk it. If it would function properly then it would be great, I am all for open source and getting away from microsoft and the like, but what good is it if it doesn't function "out of the box"? We are not tech geeks...we just want it to work! I don't mind learning a little about how to tweek it or resolve simple issues, but this is getting old and tiring and I just want/need my computer to work and load programs/websites without these problems persisting.
I thank you for your help and patience, I appreciate the experience and hope Ubuntu gets these things worked out and when/if they do I will be glad to give it another go. If you will not provide me with the instructions I need to revert my system back to windows 98, then I will go elsewhere to find the information I need to do so.
Best regards

I am disappointed too, Roger.
I switched from XP to Ubuntu about 2.5 years ago and it has always worked for me - not always without an occasional hiccup, I must admit but easily adjusted. For me it started as a journey of exploration and developed into a journey of no return. Now there are 4 computers in my household running Ubuntu 8.04.
If you are running XP, you can install Ubuntu in XP using Wubi which is included in 8.04. That will install Ubuntu as a programme on XP which can easily be removed via the Control Centre.
If you want to install Windows 98, just put the disc into your machine and reboot and then follow the prompts. There will be a few questions that require answers, the same as installing Ubuntu, relating to locale and language, etc. Please be aware that 98 is an unsupported operating system - it is obsolete.
To put this episode into perspective, there is nothing for Ubuntu to sort out - the only issue for you was Firefox and its malfunctions may well have been due to other factors such as hardware or internet setup. You never did describe your computer equipment.

When you say re-install Win98 is that because your hardware is reasonably old? If so a different distro might be better, also its fun to try out a few 'Live Cd distros' such as Puppy, TinyMe, antiX, Wolvix and so on. These all run straight from the Cd you burn without having to install anything on your hard-drive. While you are trying out a couple of those maybe it'd be worth downloading and burning Xubuntu, making sure it's the 32bit version and the most recent release.
Xubuntu should be better for your machine, hopefully :)
http://
look for a speedy mirror giving you
PC (Intel x86) desktop CD
rather than the 64bit version
Good luck and have fun :)
PS Many people set-up a dual boot system so they can choose which operating system they want to use when they first boot-up. This often eases the transition into Linux while keeping the computer usable. Setting up a dual boot can be tricky but not as tough as what you have been doing already. On a 10Gig drive i'd choose 2 small versions of operating systems, eg Win98 and TinyMe (or something, rather than Xp and Ubuntu)

I tend to have a LOT of the mirrors selected in Synoptic's preferences and that seems to make my updating faster. Difficult to tell tho.

I'm impressed with the amount of work marcobra is putting into this. It's one of the great things about Linux. So many people so willing to give so much time to help others get the kind of satisfaction and relief of getting free of the costly cycle of OS and hardware upgrades. marcobra is a star. Good luck sorting the problems out :)

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.
If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved.

Could someone please delete that last posting? Isn't an address like that very personal info which should be removed from a public forum?
