Cannot get java runtime plugin installed to Firefox 3.0.3

Asked by pasayten

I have just set up Ubuntu 8.04 on a desktop PC (x86) and in running Firefox browser, I have some web pages that need java runtime plugin installed. I have installed Jave 6 runtime in Ubuntu. I also put the ln in the mozilla plugin directory to point to the library file. However, when I go to plugins in the Firefox tools, java runtime is not shown on the list. How do I get it to work in Firefox?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. New to Unbuntu, but many years with Windars and some debian linux...

Hi,

Please open a Terminal and then type the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-plugin

After that, open Firefox, go to Tools/Addons/Plugins. You should now see Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_06-b02 in the plugins list.

Regards,

Mark

I installed the above plugin and that looked fine, but when opening Firefox, no java plugin was listed in the plugin list. Strange... I have added a java console 1.6.0.2 to extensions. I have Ubuntu 8.04 LT and Firefox 3.0.3

Hello,

Try installing ubuntu-restricted-extras in Synaptic, and uninstall all other java packages, it solved the problem for me.

Hope it works,
