Firefox 3.0.3 characters not SHARP

Asked by Duke

I just installed Ubuntu last version 8.04 and when I surf the web with Firefox I cannot see the web pages clearly, but all characters are not clear and sharp as they should be... why?
Do I need to download something?
The same websites visited with IE are much better in terms of character quality and sharpness.

Hi Duke,
you have different options to set/mangle-with to obtain sharper characters on the screen.
I'll suggest you to start by controlling the anti-alias and resolution (fonts dpi) options in the system settings.

A second way is to install the crystal-clear font from Red Hat (Fedora).
It has been studied as an enhanced version of the crystal-clear(c) technology used by Microsoft for its fonts.

Installation of fonts can be done through the FontManager.

Linux' display engine (Xserver) is far more evoluted as Windows' one.
By the use of this two tricks you will obtain sharper characters as you will have in Windows.

Since I use Kubuntu with the KDE wdm, I cannot give you exact indications on where to find the related setup panes in Gnome, sorry. I'm confident somebody else will help you on this.

One way to get the setup features you need to trim the outlook of the screen fonts is to install the following from synaptic:

.kcontrol
.ksystemsettings

Then, from a virtual terminal run:

>systemsettings

and select

Look & Feel [Appearance]

You will be presented with some sections, select:

[Fonts] for mangling with the antialiasing settings to accomodate the way characters are displayed on your particular screen, and to rise the fonts' resolution;

[Font Installer] for installing the Crystal-clear font I've suggested.

Again, probably there are the omologous setup panels in Gnome too. It is up to another helper to point you to the right place. ;-)

Please don't forget that some modifications require you to exit from the "systemsettings" panel and to restart the Xserver, that means:

a) Log-out from Gnome and relogin
or
b) reboot
or
c) after having exited all your applications, press [ctrl]+[Alt]+[Back] and relogin.

Option a) makes most sense.

Regards

It doesn't surprise me since that font is part of the Red Hat distribution, as I've explained before.
There is another way to get it if you can take your ands on a Windows installation.
You have simply to look for the system font (the .ttf one) in the c:\windows directory, take it, and install it onto your Ubuntu Linux through the same [Font Installer] described before.

P.S. Please don't copy/paste the entire message you reply here. It isn't useful and disturbing. Thanks

Maybe you don't feel comfortable without *all* the M$ fonts due to the fact you are used to see Windows system fonts.
In this case you can get them all at one time by following what suggested by Marcobra in #45480.

After that you have to select the appropriate fonts in Firefox, indeed.
