Open software sources from the system admin menu.

Disable cdrom's, enable main, universe, multiverse and restricted if you want. On the 3rd party tab you can use the partner repos if you want.

On the security tab - unless you feel capabale of fixing breakages make sure that proposed and backports are disbaled.

Close and reload when asked then you should be able to run the apt-get update command.

I'd also recommend that you open System menu, Administration and choose Software Sources.
Choose "other" from "download from" list and the choose best server button.
This will pick the optimal download site for updates based on your location.

The error you are seeing is because you still have the CD enabled in this "Software Sources" area when you ideally want a remote updates sites.
