can't hear internetradio/-streams

nothing of all the sound-players within my Firefox browser (version 3.0) is working.
my oS: Ubuntu 8.04
there comes no sound at all, or a chopping noise only.

I have had similar problems with Ubuntu. Try double clicking on the sound icon and bring up the sound mixer. Try changing devices under the "file" menu. Rather than using the ALSA mixer, change to your sound card driver mixer. That worked for me
