Exporting bookmarks, passwords, cookies etc

Asked by Rayd

Ubuntu is my primary desktop but I do reinstall it from time to time. Upgrading versions, installing into virtual environments and installing on ever larger disks. Firefox is key to my job and every time I move machines I have to start again. Of course I save and re-import my bookmarks but Firefox does so much more than just bookmarks. Is there a way to save and copy all the required Firefox directories? Will this copy across my passwords that are secured with a master password? Perhaps a quick howto with gotchas would be in order. It would be really nice to be able to sync Firefox to a central repository so that when I use a different copy all my stuff is still available.

Look into the directory ~/.mozilla/firefox (~ is your home dir) and you will see your profile(s). That contains all you asked for you can copy it around, back it up and maybe use it from a network drive (don't know about simultaneous access).
Same goes for the directory ~/.mozilla-thunderbird if you are using thunderbird. It contains all your account settings and e-mails.

Basically, if you keep a back-up of your home directory including all the hidden files and directories (those starting with a "."), and restore it unto each new installation, all applications should be configured as they were before. I find that a very neat feature of LInux.

Cheers,
Henning

I am installing Ubuntu on a new computer, as my old one is so obsolete it won't do very much, and won't take 14. How do I transfer my firefox passwords to the new computer? Please give a detailed answer....
