Ubuntu 8.04 - No Sound In Firefox Flash, Trying To Upgrade To Flash Player 10

Asked by jackson

Hello all,

I'm not a technical person, but am trying hard regarding this issue.

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04, 32-bit, i-386. Love the distribution, but the Flash player in Firefox Beta 3 v5 runs video, but no sound. After reading through other messages in forums and bug reports, I downloaded the Flash player beta 10 -- flashplugin-nonfree_10.0.1.218ubuntu1_i386.deb -- and am trying to install it using gDebi - but I am getting dependency messages for libflashsupport and another package. But libflashsupport is uninstalled in my default Ubuntu 8.04 (as is the other libdev? package), as it was causing instability and crashes in Flash Player 9 due to PulseAudio being used now in Ubuntu, per the developer threads.

So do I have to install the dependency packages first to try the Flash Beta 10 solution? Should I install them?

Any help would be appreciated. If the solution is command line based, I would most appreciate it if each line of command is included.

Thanks again,

jwwjr

using flash player 9 and installing libflashsupport should work for most users. libflashsupport is a workaround to avoid the problems that the flash/pulse combination seems to have. to install libflashsupport, run in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install libflashsupport

Had the same problem in Kubuntu Jaunty Beta.

liviu@linorien:~$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:

liviu@linorien:~$ aplay -l

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC660-VD Analog [ALC660-VD Analog]

I just created a new file .asoundrc in my home directory:

Go to (get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)

Download (tar.gz for linux)
Save to desktop
Right click on file (install flash player_10_linux tar.gz)
select (extract here)
that will open a file named (install_flash_player_10_linux)
right click on the file and open it
that will open 2 files
right click flash player installer
click run in terminal
instructions in terminal to install

you may have to reboot 2 times to make it work
This is a easiest fix for flash that I have found
hope it works for you
