firefox repeatedly crashes ubuntu

Asked by andrew

Using firefox 3 in ubuntu. If a site takes more than about ten seconds to load, firefox stops responding (greys out) and I have to use "force quit" and then start firefox again. This happens CONSTANTLY. Firefox 2 does exactly the same thing. Is there a hidden timeout setting?

Firefox 2 running in xp does not do this.

Thanks,
Andrew

This might be related with the following bug report:

Turning off "suspected attack site" and "suspected forgery" warnings in security settings seems to solve the problem.

Wow! Fast response there nglnx...many thanks

Do you have flash enabled? Some people are having crashes and hangs, as can be seen in:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/192888

Could you please provide more information:

What graphics card are you using?
Do you have desktop effects enabled?

Here are some more questions:

- Have you tried deleting firefox's old profile and begin with a new profile?
- Have you tried using firefox's safe mode, to see if you are having a problem with any extension?
- Have you tried to start firefox from the command line, to see if it complains about something?
- Have you tried loading those sites with epiphany to see if it is a firefox problem only?

Deleted old profile and created new one...no help.
Started ff in safe mode...no help.
Started ff from command line...no complaints...no help.
Problem is even worse with epiphany.

Bless you...I know you're trying!

In firefox, if you go to Tools, Error Console, what do you see?
Also, have you tried to create another user, in order to test firefox in a clean environment?

Let us resume what we have found until now:

-Since you have disabled the check for forgery and atack sites, we can exclude sqlite related problems
-Since you have already disabled desktop effects, we can exclude a compiz bug
-Since you have started in safe mode, we can exclude extension problems
-Since you have started with new profile, we can exclude botched profile

BUT

Since epiphany is experience the same problems, I suspect xulrunner (gecko engine) related problems

Created new user (clean environment)...no help.
There are no errors listed in the error console, but there are a lot of warnings like this:

error in parsing value for property 'filter', declaration dropped

unknown property 'repeat'. declaration dropped

error in parsing value for property 'vertical-align'. declaration dropped

error in parsing value for property 'font-weight'. declaration dropped

error in parsing value for propety 'width'. declaration dropped

expected ',' or '{' but found '0.1'. ruleset ignored due to bad selector

expected color but found 'none'. error in parsing value for property 'background-color'. declaration dropped

and so on and so on. I've been at this for over 24 hours and I have to stop for today. Take a break...I'll hear from you tommorrow.

This isnt really related to firefox im gonna lean more to the sites that are visited or a more general package but since it happens in Opera that tells me its not related to GTK nor Gecko. PLease see bug https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/230859 as to how i know it happens on Opera. Can someone please test Links2 and Konq. in KDE3 and or 4

Can you help with this problem?
