How do I change the default printer?

Asked by David lambert

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy Heron with Firefox 3 beta 5. Although I have changed the default printer in System>Administration>Printing, Firefox appears to ignore this setting. I do not see a separate option in Firefox preferences to set a default printer. What is the method for setting the default printer to be used by Firefox?

You did it the right way. Did you close and reopen Firefox? I know it tends not to see the change until it reloads.

Yes, I did close and reopen Firefox. I even tried logging off and on. Neither fixed the problem.

Hmmm, not sure what to say. I only have one printer and then the PDF printer. When my regular printer is selected as the default is the one firefox also selects. This should be one of those things that just works. Do other apps recognize the default printer you have selected? If so, it could be a firefox issue. If not, then something is odd.

On further investigation it appears that ALL applications default to the incorrect printer. Changing the default in the System>Administration>Printing has no effect except that IT remembers my selection. Incidentally I "upgraded" to Hardy using a fresh install on a , so I can't blame the previous version :-(

This problem seems to be printer driver specific. If I remove my USB connected Epson Stylus Photo R1800, then my other printers behave correctly in all applications. Adding the Epson causes all applications to think this printer is the default regardless of the printer settings. This behavior is not evident using Gutsy.

It seems to have got very quiet out there! Any other suggestions?

This is still an issue. If I install my USB connected Epson Stylus Photo R1800, then all applications use it as the default printer regardless of the stetting in System>Administration>Printing. Without this printer installed, everything behaves correctly. My other printers are:

Laser_MFP_1815 (Default)
PDF
magicolor_2430DL

Sorry David, I ran out of ideas. I thought maybe someone else might be able to help. Your comment about the usb printer however suggests a driver issue. My guess would be the driver you are using for the Epson printer is conflicting or just plain not working right. If you can try a different driver that might be worth a try. I've never used Epson but with my HP printer there are a lot of available drivers to choose from. It may also be possible to download a driver from Epson (not sure how well they support Linux though).

Other than that, I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions.

Can you help with this problem?
