can't change firefox font

Asked by mike

I don't have a adjust font size section under the view menu in 8.04TLS and so I can't get pages fonts to display they way they should.. Meaning that I have to either scroll to see the pictures or have to adjust the actual font styles to try and get the page to display somewhat normal... Example nhl.com, cnn.com

Hello Mike

Try using the "Zoom" option under the View menu. That may help.

Click on Edit, Preferences and select the Content icon to find the font settings. What are the values under the "Font and Colours" section in Firefox preferences? My values are "serif" and 16. Under the Advances button is "Allow pages to choose their own fonts ..." checkmarked? Mine is.

I was able to view nhl.com and cnn.com without any issues. We should be able to fix this problem.

Ok. Is it possible that you could post a picture of your desktop so I could see what you are seeing.

When you have cnn.com up just hit Print Screen on your keyboard. Post it to Picasa or another website like that.

Hello

Thanks, I see the problem now. It was on my PC as well but I wasn't looking close enough. Basically what is happening is some websites (cnn, nhl apparently) are making assumptions about the width of the characters of a font. For example it is assuming the width of "Scores" will be small enough with the default fonts of the browser. Now the thing is fonts can vary and the Bitstream Serif used in Ubuntu is wider than say "Times New Roman". Oh and by the say "Bitstream Serif" and "Times New Roman" are two styles of a Serif font.

To fix thing problem try change your "Serif" font in the FireFox preferences to one that is "thinner". I chose "FreeSerif" and the website worked correctly. I am not certain if this font is included with a standard Ubuntu. Try different fonts until one works for you.

I poked around the nhl website and resolved the problem a bit further. The elements that are not displaying correctly are supposed to use "Ariel". Ariel is a sans-serif font that is included with Windows. The developers of NHL.COM did not give any consideration to computers that do not have this font.

To add Ariel make sure that the "multiverse" repository is enabled on your computer. Go to Software Sources to do this.

Then go to the command line and install the package msttcorefonts.

ex: # sude apt-get install msttcorefonts

Can you help with this problem?
