fade to greyscale and unresponsive

firefox 3.5 beta, display fades to greyscale and is unresponsive for 5 to 60 seconds. no add-ons enabled. running
ubuntu 8.04 all updates current, inspiron 2 ghz laptop, intel graphics, 1 gb ram. problem not present on previous update

Turned off visual effects in Ubuntu, problem stopped.

What do you think's the cause of the problem. I get the same.
