how do I get into updating my computer if I cannot remember the password from years ago?

I need to update my system so I can work on school related projects. I cannot remember the password to get into the system or to change it because this was done years ago by a company who is no longer in business. I do not know the password to get into it and therefore I cannot update anything. Please help me in this matter.
