USB Flash Drive--UBUNTU, Help !!!!

Asked by Tall Whites

HELP !!! ---I am a computer dummy!!

I have a Toshiba laptop. My operating system is, Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32-bit SP2.

I WANT THE JOY OF RUNNING UNBUNTU FROM A FLASH DRIVE. I have a 8GB flash drive.

Problem is I do not know how to down load Ubumtu on my flash drive.

I went to the unbuntu site, and after looking around I found,

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

I followed the directions, but no unbuntu on my flash drive!!

I was successful on step one. On step two the instructions are not clear for dummies.

I GOT THE FIRST PART OF STEP 2 correct, but when I click browse, I got a window which did not look like one in the picture.

It is from here I got screwed up, I clicked on the left looking for the USB, clicked it and got the second window in step 2.

BUT THIS 2nd WINDOW DID NOT HAVE A FILE NAME, IT DID SAY ISO FILE ON THE RIGHT TAB.

So I copied, PRECISE- DESKTOP -ISO from the picture.

I hit open and got a window that looked like step 3.

I hit create and something downloaded into my flash drive.

When I open my flash drive it says:

license 4/4/2012 text document 18 kb

 UNI-USB-INSTALLER - R 10/17/2013 text document 18 kb

UNI-USB- INSTALLER-C 1/11/2013 text document 48 kb

As you can no see ubuntu is not on my flash drive!!

So how do I get the ubuntu 13.10 on my flash drive?

PLEASE IF YOU RESPOND DO SO IN DETAIL!! do not skip or assume I know.

HELP!! HELP!!

You can use unetbootin and it will even download the ISO for you and put it on the USB. If you have the ISO you can select it in the application and use that (save double downloading).

YOU NEED TO GIVE ME STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS.

I do not know what an ISO is.

Once I have an ISO how do I download unbuntu?

YOU ARE ASSUMING A LOT.

AS I SAID I AM A NOVICE.

YOU NEED TO FULLY EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!

An ISO is an image of some data, in this case a CD.

Why are we typing in caps? Its harder to read and looks like you are shouting. SO DON'T USE. CAPS.

I mentioned a word "unetbootin" you could usebsomething called "google" to investigate that and what it is. You've used Google, right?

Instead of immediately asking for step by step instructions try using the web and a liitle brainpower to find out what these things are. You have a computer ith access to the largest information database known to mankind yet you want people to explain stuff to you. Without this basic ability you will struggle with IT and life in general as nobody is born knowing everything. You have the ability and means to find out things for yourself but choose not to.....why?

Please STOP INSULTING ME.

Who do you think you are?

I think I have it down loaded.

Andrew-woodghead666, rather than criticizing me, you should look at your own IMPATIENCE !! and do something about it.

Perhaps you are not qualified to give advice here, as you do not seem to have the physiological profile to deal with the public.

Andrew. If you stil need to make an USB bootable first download Ubuntu from here:

 http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Be sure you choose the right distribution for your machine ( x32 bits or x64 bits)

Then download "unetbootin" from here":

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Then go and read carefully step by step tutorial how to use unetbootin here:

http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2014/03/how-to-create-bootable-linux-usb-drive.html

That`s all. Good luck!

Be sure to MD5 test the ISO you download
