Cannot access network shares in file save dialogs

I wish to save files in FireFox directly on a network share. I have connected to the share via "Network Servers" in Places and I have the shares available on the desktop. I can browse to the shares in the file manager through the desktop icon or Places. However, they do not show up in FireFox's save location dialog, neither as an entry under "Desktop" nor anywhere else that I can find.

Are these shares available as a mount point on the filesystem somewhere, or is there some other way to access them from applications other than the file manager?

Hi.

That resource you can access via file manager (nautilus) is called gnome-vfs (virtual filesystem). That's well integrated with GNOME.

Many GNOME applications, like text editor (gedit), music player (rhythmbox), and so on, can access those places.

Unfortunately, firefox is not so integrated with GNOME as we'd want. So, you can't access these servers (or places) from firefox.

OK, it's a know bug in firefox package. It's Bug #31471.

Once this bug is fixed, we are able to list network shares in file open/save dialogs.

Hi,

Having here problems in ubuntu karmic w/ firefox 3.5.8. Namely, the browser cant see directly mounted, remote SMB shares mounted by GNOME VFS. The network shares don't even appear on it, albeit they appear in Nautilus.
As we are using professionally linux as a desktop system, it is rather important for us to iron out this problem.

As anyone some hints or insights on the subject?

Almost 2012 and the problem persist. It`s counter-productive to have to copy a file with nautilus, and then to be able to import.

the easiest workaround is to create in nautilus a bookmark pointing to .gvs. Then using firefox (or thunderbird) browse the network share starting with .gvfs.

One caveat is you must mount the network share before being able to browse them in FF
