I am unable to open a pdf attachment from thunderbird

I just upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04. When I click on a pdf received in thunderbird, I receive the usual inquiry as to whether I wish to save the file or to open it. When I click on opening it, it starts to open, but then fails to do so. I assume that the default viewer, xpdf, is not working. What is the best solution? To use another pdf viewer? If so, it is not clear to me how to find it.

How is this related to Firefox??

If you install xpdf and use that instead of evince, does it open?

If I save the pdf to, say, my desktop and click on it, the file opens
with evince, but if I try to open it from Thunderbird, it fails. Indeed,
I am equally unable to click on a link to open the link. Instead, I get
a window labelled `launch application' and instruction to choose an
application, which is also not obvious to me how to do.

Hello,

There is a plugin available in Firefox. In firefox, look for the menu Edit, then Settings, then click on the "Applications" icon.
Do you see PDF there? You can check out if you want to open it directly from inside firefox, or with adobe acrobat, and so on.

You can also check if you installed Adobe Reader. Go to Ubuntu Software Center, search Adobe Reader, and check if it is installed. When installed, you will not have the "window labelled `launch application' and instruction to choose an application" anymore.
