Ubuntu 9.10 Archive Manager Cannot Open .lz Type Files

Asked by Steve Redmond

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).

Archive Manager (aka "file-roller) 2.28.1 cannot open a .lz type file.

Double-clicking on a .lz type file in File Browser will open Archive Manager and present an error dialogue stating, "Could not open 'file.lz, Archive type not supported".

The 'Open' file dialogue of Archive Manager, using 'All archives' selection criteria, does not show any .lz type files present.

The Archive Manager description advertises the capability to open .lz files, but this capability does not seem to be supported:
    File-roller supports the following formats:
      * Single files compressed with gzip (.gz), bzip (.bz), bzip2 (.bz2),
        compress (.Z), lzip (.lz), lzop (.lzo), lzma (.lzma) and xz (.xz)

My questions are:
1. Is Archive Manager capable of opening .lz files? If so, what are the installation/setup required, and procedure to follow?
2. Is this a bug, or is this an obsolete Archive Manager program description?
3. Is there a later version of Archive Manager (file-roller) that will resolve this problem? I have seen references to v2.29.2, but it wasn't evident in the description that it addressed this issue, and I was not able to see it in the Synaptic Package Manager.
3. How can I open .lz type files?

Thank you for your time and attention to this issue.

Steve

Hi :)

I would guess that there is just a library missing somehow on your install. To install the missing library please open the Software Centre and use a search tool to look for "lzip" or ".lz" and then install a couple of packages that look about right. This should increase the functionality of your Archive Manager.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks Tom for your reply.

I had no luck with the search for libraries to handle lzip or .lz, at least in the Ubuntu Software Center. These search terms both yielded the Archive Manager as the only result.

I had previously uninstalled and then reinstalled the Archive Manager, just in case some component was missing and that might catch it. I had no luck with that approach, and hence I raised my questions.

Thanks for your interest and suggestion. I am still looking for a solution.

P.S. - I am using the full i386 desktop .iso version of Ubuntu 9.10, installed on a USB stick with persistence (casper-rw). I think this should have given me all the released components, and I haven't knowingly deleted anything.

Hi :)

Yes it sounds like it should be working & you had already done what i would have tried. With Synaptic Package Manager i was given 3 additional packages to try in Ubuntu 9.04. Is Synaptic in the path

System - Administration - Synaptic

Sorry i dont know a better answer for this, hopefully someone else might give a better answer
Good luck & regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Try looking up "rar" in

System - Administration - "Synaptic Package Manager"

there should be a simple library or application or program that will add that functionality to Archive Manager. I would probably pick any of the programs Synaptic offers pretty much at random, as long as it doesn't start with K or Qt (unless using Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

PS sorry i am on a horrible Windows machine right now and cant look-up any of the choices from here. Please let us know how it goes and which options you added using Synaptic :)

[SOLVED] (I'm running Ubuntu 10.4, so this solution may not be available to earlier releases)

== Problem ==
I downloaded an .lz file from the gnu project (http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/ddrescue/ddrescue-1.15.tar.lz). After downloading the file, I tried to open it or extract the contents. File roller would not open it (telling me that the archive format was unsupported).

== Solution ==
I opened my software package manager called Synaptic (e.g. from the console: sudo synaptic &). Then I searched for lzip using Synaptic and found a package called lzip:

lzip v. 1.9-1
data compressor based on the LZMA algorithm

Lzip is a lossless data compressor based on the LZMA algorithm, with very safe
integrity checking and a user interface similar to the one of gzip or bzip2.

Lzip decompresses almost as fast as gzip and compresses better than bzip2,
which makes it well suited for software distribution and data archiving.

== Results ==
After selecting and installing this package, File Roller did open the .lz file
