I downloaded tarball for hplip- 1.7.4a.tar.gz, but need step-by-step how to proceed

I'm a new Linux/Ubuntu user, and I can't figure out how to get my hp psc 2175xi to work. I downloaded hplip- 1.7.4a.tar.gz, but I am unfamiliar with the rest of the terminology regarding what I should do from here. Like, how do I install it? I bog down because of my lack of understanding of terminology and how to access the necessary areas of my hardware/software.

hplip is already installed on the latest ubuntu (edgy and feisty).
