file-roller extracting error 'command exited abnormally' for Dapper file-roller
I'm trying to create an 'iso' file and then burn a DVD. File-roller works from rar file 01 thru rar file 86 of 93 and then an error message says "an error occurred while extracting files, command exited abnormally." Then when i click on bar that reads "command line output" it shows that file-roller extracted 01 thru 086 of 93 files, and then the error occurred. I ran a file integrity check on all 93 files and it said they were all ok. Yet each time i run the archive manager's file-roller program, i get the same error. I have been unable to run the 'help' section of the RAR program. What can i do or try now?

Have you tried extracting the files, but not including the one that it jams at?

OK, i removed file # 87 of 93 files and ran file-roller and it jammed at exactly the same place[so it wouldn't skip #87 and go from 86 to 88 and the rest thru 93] and the iso file was 4.0GB but it's supposed to be 4.3GB. BTW, there are 2 DVDs and the exact same thing occurred on the 2nd DVD.

To make this clearer: i used a bittorrent program to download a ripped DVD set in a .rar file format. I got the 8.6 GB download completed. When i tried to use file-roller in the Archive Manager is when i ran into these errors[refer to start of this string]

ok, i tried removing file 86 & 87 of 93 files and ran file-roller again. I got a new error message: "Could not perform operation. This archive is password protected. Please specify a password with the command: Edit->Password."
I tried this before by going to 'edit' and at the end of the drop down menue it had 'password' and i clicked on it, and it read: "NOTE: the password will be used to encrypt files you add to the current archive and to decrypt files you extract from the current archive. When the archive is closed the password will be deleted."
Well i tried making up a password and running it again but it didnt work.
I checked on the web where the file torrent was being uploaded and there was no password associated with this rar archive.

hmmm, try the terminal application 'unrar'
sudo apt-get install unrar
open a terminal and type 'unrar'
then use the command extensions as you need to.
for example, to unrar all .rars in a directory, i would do
cd some\ directory/
unrar x *

unrar is already installed. Ok, this is where i need help using Terminal. I moved the archive to my 'oem/downloads' folder but i'm not sure how to type the address is it 'home/oem/
would it be: cd home\oem/
Can u guide me step by step to use Terminal? thanks.

Terminal's abilites are virtually unlimeted so i shall give you the information relevant to you
at the top left of the screen click on Applications>
then type 'cd downloads'
if the only thing in your downloads folder is those .rar files, type 'unrar x *'
that should do it
(DONT FORGET, to put in the correct / marks in the correct areas, see where you went wrong with it
bash: cd: home^oem/

check this out. what i have is 2 HDs and all the trouble i was having was on my 2nd HD. When i moved all those rar files to my main or first HD is where we got it to work.
I moved the rar files back to the 2nd HD. When i tried to move the 4.3GB iso file [after i used it to burn a DVD] back to the 2nd HD it failed and stopped when the size reached 4.0 GB! So i left it alone for now but moved it out of the 'downloads' file. Then i moved all the rar files from the 2nd DVD to 'downloads' folder and tried same thing we had done before but it wouldn't work. So i tried finally to go ahead and use the Archive Manager's file-roller program to unpack these files and this time it worked! and i got the 4.3 GB iso file and burned DVD2. I moved rar files back to 2nd HD. Then the same thing happened when i tried to move the iso file as before. I can't understand why this process only seems to work on the main HD?
So, ok, i'm done! Thanks again.

Sam, pls read previous post which begins"Check this out . . . " just 3 posts back.
Why would my 2nd HD cause the file-roller of Archive manager to "exit abnormally" at the end of file #86 on both DVD1 and DVD2? But when i moved all of those rar files over to HD 1 the rile-roller completes its task and unzips all 93 files without a hitch?
I've noticed other problems when i'm copying a bunch of files and moving them that sometime the move fails but doesnt tell me about it. For instance, i copied a GB of songs to my Sandisk portable mp3 player. When i'm playing the songs i find some of them were blended in with other songs! There seems to be something wrong with my RAM or with the 2nd HD. What does it sound like to you?
