Archive Manager cannot open rar file

I suspect that the reason RAR is not supported in the archive manager is because the code to unpack it is not freely available. You can install the "unrar" command line program using the synaptic package manager, and then in a terminal use the following command to unrar the RAR file.

$ unrar e /path/to/rarfile.rar

Replacing the last parameter with the path and name of the RAR file.

If you install either unrar or rar, the Archive Manager will support .rar archives.

However, they are not installed by default for copyright reasons, as also written by Alan.
