I am using ubuntu 10.04, & have downloaded ubuntu 14.04, but how do I change over to the download?

Asked by Cliff West

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer TravelMate 4720 laptop & I need to upgrade my browser for better use of gmail & you-tube.

When I try to download google chrome, or upgrade firefox, I get this mssg; Error Dependancy is not satisfiable.

I've downloaded the latest ubuntu (14.04) but dont know how to install it..
This would solve my problem, I imagine? ..how do I install?

Its the same as when you instaled 10.04

Wipe 10.04 off and install 14.04 to the freed space. You can restore your userdata from your backups.

I installed from a CD.. Do I have to burn a CD to install 14.04?

You can burn the .iso file to a DVD, or you can create a bootable USB stick.

Instructions for both (and doing that using Ubuntu, Windows or OSX) are here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Do not forget to create backup copies of your important files to external media before you wipe your 10.04 system.

A thought has just occurred to me..
Prior to loading 10.04, I tried to load 14.04 from a DVD.. It went through the process till near the end, then gave an error message, (The wording of which I unfortunately do not recall).
Could it be incompatable with my laptop?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
If 10.04 is ok then so will 14.04.
If you burned a CD / DVD, did you burn as slowly as possible?

No.. what is MD5 testing, & how & why does one do that?
A friend burned for me.. I'll enquire on burn speed used..

So you reckon the laptop wont be the problem?
