Open the Terminal. (If you press the three keys --- CTRL+ALT+T simultaneously, you will be able to open the it.) Then Copy & Paste the following line in that Terminal

lsb_release -a; uname -a

Press the enter Key. You will get an output. The output will be about the Release, Description etc. Copy and Paste the output in the Message box below. This is essential for giving you directions.

Is your computer properly connected?
Which is the application you are using? Is it Thunderbird?

Using what email application?

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a

How can anyone possibly reply to such little information?? You could be accessing your email in a million different ways...we don't even know the release of Ubuntu. We cannot see your system so you need to fill us in.

Didn't you try using Firefox Web Browser (if it is there) ? You can go straight to www.gmail.com or www.yahoomail.com etc and send/receive your Emails.

If you are talking about Thunderbird Mail or Evolution Mail, you will have to set them first (Servers, User ID etc.) It may not work properly if you are using a very old version.

If you open it and click on its 'Help'. You will get an idea.

Can you help with this problem?
