Ubuntu 12.04 unstable: Archive manager fails to open .docx/.odf for viewing its content (archive type not supported)

Asked by Tin Peressutti

In Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2, Archive Manager fails to open a .docx or .odf files. In previous versions of Ubuntu (11.04, 11.10) this action is possible, AM can open a such files for viewing its content if user chose to right click->open with archive manager. Since .docx and .odf files are XML documents, user should be able to view the content of the file (images, text and stuff are all compressed in a single file with docx/odf extension). But in 12.04 the Archive Manager is unable to open files with that extensions, declaring "Archive type not supported".

I suggest you report a bug. Precise isn't ready or stable.

What's the status?

This is a regression compared to previous versions! Even Windows does better with the 7z contextual menu that allows the opening of ODF files directly...

Do we have to reopen this question every 15 days???
Why the bug report has been closed as invalid? Is there any rationale?

NB: this regression is in 12.04 final too.

As of current stable build (clean install), Ubuntu's File-roller is still unable to open docx/odf files, stating the same error: "Archive type not supported"

Package:
file-roller 3.4.1-0ubuntu1
