all my down loads say command line error when I try to open them

Asked by Mike Colley

When ever I download something and then try to open it to use, a screen pops up and says,"an error occurred while loading the archive".Here is a sample of what I'm talking about." Command line output,Archive:/tmp/mobiola web cam 1050 iphone.exe End- of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zip file or it constitutes one disc of a multi-part archive. Can not find zip file directory". I get this every time I down load anything. Could you please help me understand what I need to do to fix this problem. Thank you, M.Colley . My e-mail is <email address hidden>.

This looks like you are trying to download windows programs from the internet and run them. This will not work.

This is generally a bad idea, as you have no knowledge of who is executing what on your computer, as you cannot trust random internet sites to give you the correct executable in a secure fashion. To avoid this problem, ubuntu uses a software repository, where software can be securely installed from a trusted location.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Software_repository

If you *really* need to run this application (you probably don't), and have already checked to make sure no application is able to do what you need from the repository, then you can install a windows emulation software program called "wine", which can run windows executables, but is not 100% guaranteed.

what are you actually trying to do?

What are you trying to achieve?

The file is a Windows binary. Ubuntu is not windows, it is a distribution of Linux so the file will most likely be of no value to you. If you fill us in with what you are trying to do we may be able to give a native solution.

You will have to forgive me as I am not to familiar with Ubuntu. I was trying to download a program where I can use my iphone as a web cam. A friend of mine set me up with Ubuntu as I was having a host of trouble using Windows XP pro. I like Ubuntu but do not know how to navigate my way around to do very much,ie: downloading or running programs I am interested in.

Most are made for windows, you need to find linux or ubuntu guides to find how to do stuff.

I did find this:
