read kernel.log in var/log to see what the problem is.

use "ubuntu-bug linux generic" to file a bug against the kernel, when it is the kernel itself.

When it is the driver: deinstallation or file a bug to:

http://ati.cchtml.com/

also xorg logs in var/log may be helpfull.

Maybe click on topic header 'Bugs' filter age newest or search with graphics specs, some xorg freezes reported there.
