Steam will not install despite all dependencies being installed

Asked by Bryan French

3 days ago I got a new Dell Inspiron with Ubuntu 14.04 preloaded. At that time Steam installed from the Ubuntu App Store and worked fine. Today there was an error when I lost internet connection during a software update and I had to reset the computer back to factory settings. After installing Steam and starting it up the terminal now opens with the following:

Steam needs to install these additional packages:
 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386, libgl1-mesa-glx:i386, libc6:i386

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 : Depends: libudev1:i386 but it is not going to be installed or
libudev0:i386 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Press return to continue:

I checked the Ubuntu Apps store and it says libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libudev1 libc6 libudev1 and libdev0 are all installed. I updated the software again and it still opens up the terminal and will not install Steam. This has become a huge headache because I have programs on Steam I pay for and now no way to access them.

Hi Manfred, I was able to get Steam to install after restoring to
factory default 3 times. But it seems like it keeps wanting to update
the software resources cache and will just sit there updating cache
without doing anything. I tried running sudo apt-get clean, but it
doesn't seem to work. The output of the comands you sent are as
follows:

I'm not comfortable running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade because I don't
know what it will do to 14.04 LTS for instance change it to 15 which I
really don't want to do.

After running sudo apt-get update the software sources were found
again. I guess I could run sudo apt-get update when I need to download
software from Ubuntu App Store and the computer has forgotten the
software resources.

Your answer is somewhat contradictory.

You say that you were able to install steam again, but the package management system tells that the steam package is not installed?

"sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" will not upgrade your system to the next Ubuntu release (15.04). The command to perform an upgrade to the next Ubuntu release would be "do-release-upgrade".
If you want to see what the dist-upgrade command would do, perform a simulation with

apt-get --simulate dist-upgrade

What is the output of
dpkg -l | grep udev
