locking my evolutio mail so that when its about to open, it requests for a password

Asked by ona

What settings do i need to modify so that anybody with access to my computer cannot just go and click my evolution mail and read all my old Evolution data because as far as my laptop is open and you cick on evolution mail, it loads the previous mails though to send a mail , it requests for password.
In summary, how do i set a password in such a way that if i click on evolution mail, it requests for password before opening.

There's no such feature.
My suggestion is if you're going to leave the desktop or laptop already on, you might press cntrl+alt+L. This will lock the desktop and ask for the password if you press any key.
You might also try to set the laptop to lock itself after X minutes of inactivity.
You can go to System>Preferences>Screensaver. Tick the box beside the option.

What do you mean by 'anybody with access to my computer'?
If you don't want them to have access to your personal email then don't give them your login password. If somebody wants to use your laptop then create an account for them. Or they can login as guest.

@ Donato - With respect to you last reply, what i mean by 'anybody with access to my computer' is you will have friends that may once in a while want to use your laptop to so some work and you dont want to go to the guest account.
At least, the ubuntu team should have had provison for that, im surprised!!!

Another solution to only lock evolution would be to set the permissions of the evolution binary to 700 (sudo chmod 700 /usr/bin/evolution) and chown it to a specialuser.
Then you only can start evolution from the console by su specialuser & evolution.

As a additional gimmick you could change the starter-link in the menu/desktop to "gksu -u specialuser & evolution" so you get a graphical password prompt for specialuser everytime when you try to start it.

If you want be absolutely sure anyone hacks your data you additionally could try to find evolutions data-storage files and chown and chmod them in the same way, so only root and this special user can read them :-).

Hope that is what you try to achieve... greets, André

You can set it up so friends can use your laptop but not evolution by using Seahorse. Go to Applications>Accessories>Password and Encryption Keys. Move your evolution passwords to a new folder keyring. Set a different password for the new folder. This will be a second layer, so it will prompt you for a password after you login and when you try opening Evolution. Make sure Evolution is pointed to this new folder.
