Can I close evolution and still get notified on new mails?

Asked by Amir Eldor

I'd like to close (or minimize to tray) the evolution window and get notified on new mails while continuing my work. That is, working without any big ugly evolution windows (it's not *that* ugly, don't be insulted).

Thanks for your question.

You need to install the package "mail-notification-evolution" via Add/Remove..., Synaptic or command line (sudo apt-get install mail-notification-evolution).

You'll now find a small configuration tool at System->Preferences->Mail notification, where you're able to specify how it will inform you and which accounts it should check. You may now safely close evolution and you'll still be informed on incoming mail.

Hello Markus Thielmann,
I tried that as I like the idea of being notified w/o having to have evolution open, until now I had just put it on its "own desktop", but when I type the given command, I receive this answer:
mr@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install mail-notification-evolution
Password:
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut... Fertig
E: Konnte Paket mail-notification-evolution nicht finden (couldn't find mail-notification-evolution)
Do you know what to do now? My system is xubuntu dapper.
Thnx mr Claes

I have installed this but when I try to set it up for Evolution I get the message that Evolution is either not running or the mail notification plugin is not installed.
Regards, Kenneth.

I think it's a bug that should be filed in the evolution mail package bug list.

I have now got it working while Evolution is running but it does not work if Evolution is closed, neither does Evolution have an option to minimize to the system tray.

@Markus Thielmann

Thanks, that solved my problem. A universal Gnome email checker is way better than one restricted to Evolution. :)

But it is a shame Evo must be open. Kinda makes the whole thing pointless... :-(

I agree. It doesn't make sense :)

Hey guys,

you can use the Evolution Tray Plugin. If installed a tray symbol is displayed when you click on it, evo will be minimized to tray. another click brings it back.

You can get it here: http://gnome.eu.org/evo/index.php/Evolution_Tray

If you want the latest version, you need to compile it (in Ubuntu 10.10)

1. Extract and go to folder
2. Open Terminal and enter:
3. sudo apt-get install intltool libglade2-dev evolution-dev
4. ./configure
5. make
6. sudo make install

For lazy people theres a ppa with an old version:

https://launchpad.net/~ripps818/+archive/ppa

Hope I could help. ;)

Thank you TheGhost for your hint, but, let me ask a question. Is the plugin the only way to achieve evo minimizing to tray. As far as I'm getting, this feature isn't supported by the notification applet? I don't really get the descripton on the website. "Recently this plugin emulates the behaviour of Mail Notification plugin from Evolution,
in order to avoid multiple icons in the notification area with different behaviour for the same app "

thanks :)
