smtp not working but pop is

Asked by John Wilson

I have suddenly lost the ability to send e-mails using Evolution and gmail.
If i go into gmail I can send a test e-mail to myself which evolution picks up but I cannot send or reply to e-mails.
I have fiddled with the preferences which are:
Server type: SMTP
Server configuration: smtp.gmail.com:587 (gmail likes ports 465 or 587, tried both)
Server requires authentication is checked
Encryption is set for TLS
Authentification: I have tried both plain and login
Username is set as the first half of our email before the @ as the druid sets it up

When I send and receive mail nothing happens.
Should I try reinstalling some of the evolution packages?

John

What is happening when you push the send button? The message is sent, or if it doesn't what error do you get? If is sent do you got any reply with an error message? Maybe is better to use the SMTP server provided by your ISP.

What is happening if you change authentication to SSL? Google says that it should be SSL http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78799

Good luck.
