PDF attachments arrived as dat-file at the receiver

Hello,
I sent an email with two pdf files, but the receiver got it as dat-file with different file names. For check I sent the mail again to my company mail address and I got it as dat file too. If I save the file and change the extension into pdf, then I get a valid pdf file. That means, the content of the file is ok, but the filename was changed.
Can anybody tell me, what's wrong?
Is it possible, that the length of the filename or special characters in the filename is the reason?
