Cannot save pictures embedded in email (not attached).

Asked by peasterday

I have email from people who have "inserted" or otherwise "embedded" them within the email and not attached them. I can see the pictures in the email, they look nice and everything, but I cannot save the pictures. I cannot find a tutorial/help anywhere to teach me to do this if even it's possible.

Hello,

I don't think you can save these images directly with evolution but there is an indirect way to save the images.
Save the email (right-click-> Save as)
Open the email file with a text editor

In this file you should see description of the images followed some lines later by encoded text.
Example:
Content-Type: image/png; name="mycoolimage.png"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Description: mycoolimage.png

iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAQCAMAAAAoLQ9TAAAABGdBTUEAAK/INwWK6QAAABl0RVh0
U29mdHdhcmUAQWRvYmUgSW1hZ2VSZWFkeXHJZTwAAAAMUExURf////X19aGhof///89Op9cAAAAE
dFJOU////wBAKqn0AAAASklEQVR42pTOMQ4AIAgDwNr+/88ioKCbHUw8UgIksSJhwcgQFNrYAGbY
MbBcEK1WcThL8/0Agi+4HKjbHLivZ0D2a0f9E3qmAAMA1MEBmI1QL8cAAAAASUVORK5CYII=

The scrambled text is in fact the image encoded with the base64 format.
Select the scrambled text and copy paste it in the box on this site:
http://www.vess.com/decode64-decode-mime.php

It should decode and give you an image.

This sucks. How do we get a request in to fix this? Also, is there a way to insert a picture in the body of the letter like you received? It is sometimes important to add something at the end of a sentence, or paragraph.

More than four years on and this is still an issue, ran into the same problem myself today.

The fastest solution is to do as Hanusz said and save the email, e.g. File > Save As mbox > email.mbox

Then simply open Thunderbird (if you don't have it, install it, it is more than worth it) and select File > Open Saved Email Message and make sure to choose the select All Files from the options.

Thunderbird will then open the email, and all you need do it Right Click > Save Image As on each image!

If only Evolution could do it so simply!

Can you help with this problem?
