E-mail and Printing problem

Asked by Norman Joseph

Hello,
I wish to correct the following problems with my Ubuntu 5.10 installation:
1) Incomming mail - Very slow to fetch emails
2) Printer - I have configured a HP 1280 Deskjet printer connected via a Linksys Print Server using TCP/IP protocol but it doesn't print.

Thank you very much.

Hello,

Your mail problem is connected to your email host, or probably to your internet connection speed. I use ubuntu's default mail client Evolution and works for me really fast.
Printig in Linux is a bit complicated, I can admit this, so the complication is with the drivers. If you need a network printer than go to System menu - Administration and Printing chose the network printer section and type the url. I have never used a network printer so to this problem I can not really say more than a word or two.

It is also possible that there is some driver problem, you should upgrade/update your Ubuntu 5.10 if you have not updated it since it's installation. Probably the problem was solved just you have not updated your system.
I have an HP 3745 printer and guess I can get pages out just if I set my configuration to an HP 3740 black printer, although my printer is a color deskjet. I can not print from Gedit for example, I get just a white sheet, just from OpenOffice.org.

So this printig stuff is not native to Linux yet.

I hope that my comment was in some way useful

Sincerely,

About Printer Setup - this are the things should I ask thus the printer attached to windows machine? if yes...then we can configure the printer...but it must be shared first the printer...then in ubuntu go to system -> administration -> printing...in printer setup window double click the printer, in printer type click on network printer and choose the windows printer (SMB) -> in host name: type the IP address of windows machine, in printer: type the printer share in windows machine, then type your username and password...then in the manufacturer look for the printer driver... then apply ....

That's it hope it will help....
