Ports for incoming and outgoing mail

Asked by drstove

When setting up Evolution Mail I can't find a place to enter the ports that gmail requires for pop service.
No problem finding them in Thunderbird but can't find them in Evolution. I cannot connect with gmail without using port settings such as 995 and 455.

From the Evolution guide in Yelp (System-> Help and support)

"Receiving Email:

Select the way you receive e-mail. You can download e-mail from a server POP POP, read and keep it on the server (Microsoft Exchange, Novell® GroupWise®, or IMAPIMAP), or read it from files that already exist on your desktop computer. Your server requires you to use a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connection. You can select from the given three options: No encryption, TLS encryption or SSL encryption.

Your system administrator might ask you to connect to a specific port on a mail server. To specify which port you use, just type a colon and the port number after the server name. For example, to connect to port 143 on the server smtp.example.com, specify smtp.example.com:143 as the server name."

Thanks for taking a shot at it Matt. As you suggested, I did add the port after the server name and that does not help. There is no difference. The screen that shows download progress still comes up but times out as before. I'll continue to use Thunderbird until someone comes up with something else.

Hey drstove!

Receiving
Server type: POP
Server: pop.gmail.com (The port is 995 bot that does not matter since it is the default for POP3 over SSL)
Use secure connection: SSL

Sending
Server type: POP
Server: smtp.gmail.com:587 (The port is 587 what is important as it is not the default)
Use secure connection: TLS encryption

I hope this will prove useful.
