Can't locate mail imported from gmail account

Evolution Inbox is labeled "435 unread e-mails imported from gmail," yet I can find only 9 of them, and those I have located are shown on the mail title listing. Plus, there is a gap of a year between the first one and the last one there. Also, I'm not receiving any new imports from gmail, even though I set up gmail to send them.

What do you use? IMAP or POP3.
