Evolution opens with fault

I expected to be able to check e-mail. It will not let me. send/receive is blanked out. The only thing hilited it the cancel button. I have removed and reinstalled by Synaptic and it still has the problem. I don't know what to cancel from. I did import my email address from another machine running Vista and OE it seemed to work ok. Was checking mail at two separate addresses and worked fine till today. I am new to Linux/Ubuntu have played with some of the older Redhat, Mandrake and some of the older stuff
