Reading Pane Date Column Format Inconsistent

Asked by techfun

I am deploying Ubuntu in a community consisting of multiple learning disabled people and in our first adopter testing we have come up against an extremely frustrating problem.

There does not seem to be a way to format the Date or Received column to consistently show simply the Date and Time the message was sent or received.

These users are quite capable of using the information if it were presented in a way that is consistent but the current view seems completely relative with today's mail showing the time, yesterdays showing the word Yesterday and the time and so forth until you get far enough back to where it shows in the format of:

Month Day Time

For differently able users its very important to establish consistency in order to help them achieve competency and this really destroys that aspect for them. I'd prefer to have them all use Evolution just because I have used it for years and its easy for me to support this group of users when they use the same software I use.

I personally like the way it shows the Date and Time now, but the "friendly" interpretive view should be able to be disabled for people who need to see numbers in place of words.

This is a very good point, and dwells in what we call "accessability". I would like to have your permission to open this request as a bug on Evolution upstream.

Hi techfun,

I briefly discussed this, and decided to go ahead and open it as a bug on Evolution upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=580660.

I will, later on, create an Ubuntu bug (under Launchpad) linking this question and the upstream bug.

Thank you.

Thank YOU! It's one of those things that I never noticed until I started working with differently abled people and what seems like a nice feature has turned into a serious aggravation for some users. What really surprised me was the inability to control that format... I selected Linux over Windows for this crew of users specifically for the ability to help them design the most usable environment possible.

Upstream has bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205137 that will probably solve it all (we can hope). This *should* be available for Evolution 2.28 (Karmic).

@techfun: new Evolution 2.28.0, on Karmic, allows for customisation of the dates. You may want to consider upgrading after the Karmic release.
