evolution calendar freezing

Asked by matt.bell

I just installed 9.04 and restored an evolution backup. Evolution freezes as soon as I click on the calendar button. The program reports a futex_wait. I can kill the process and restart the program by running "evolution --component=mail". I can use the other functions but as soon as I click the calendar it freezes again.

I would also like to know if it's possible to have evolution pop up reminders using the new notification system? If so does evolution need to be running? Is it possible to have reminders require acknowledgement? If evolution is not the appropriate program to use can you suggest a good reminder program?

Thank you.

Hey!
That is my problem too ...

Been googleing for a while and ended up here.

I also installed 9.04 and was hoping to give Evolution a good try, wanting the calendar.
But every time I click the calendar Evolution freezes, the window goes black and I have to force quit.....

Sure would like that calendar to work :)

Another one with this issue is here
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+question/68488

It might be a bug, so just click in the main menu of evolution - about -> report a bug (or alike)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

I guess no reminder, just for email arrival.
##note feedback is welcome

Since I don't use any mail app I use sunbird calendar as reminder.
There are simple addons for Firefox e.g. ReminderFox
Other, e.g. gtodo [GNOME] or KAlarm [KDE] or calcurse [CLI based]
You may search Synaptic, it offers all kind of office software, just take a look in the left window menu or search with keywords.

I just deleted all of my calendars in the file system and started again.

The new one's seemed to work just fine untill I saved a recuring date and then BAM it now freezes again.

Help.

just like bob, all was fine until I tried to save changes made to a recurring event that spans may and june. I can access all months except may and june. when I do try to go to those months, the calendar freezes and I have to restart. I downloaded 9.04 last night. is it possible to remove it?

You need to reinstall in any case.
Downgrade is only possible via installing from LiveCD e.g. 8.10 or else.

I had the same problem, calendar - on Evolution - freezing once I'd restored three calendar files that had been backed-up before installing 9.04. I worked out that it was only one of these that caused a problem.

A work-around - not a solution - is to download KOrganizer, put the old calendar files into that, export them in .ics format then bring the resulting files into Evolution using the 'import' command in the file menu. The Evolution calendar - loaded with the old data now appears to work perfectly - including accepting new recurring events.

I hope this is some use?

Patrick

Patrick, I am curious.

Why did you not stick with KOrganizer?

I really NEED to have the reoccurring feature work for what I do and I was thinking of switching to KOranizer just to have that function working. Did you find anything wrong or something you didn't like?

Thanks in advance. Bob.

Hi Bob,

I like the integration of email, contacts and calendar that Evolution
offers. I'm not sure if this is possible with KOrganizer? My Evolution
settings are customised, learning and personalising a new programme is
work and I'm busy with other stuff (and lazy too).

I hope this answers your question?

Patrick

I spoke too soon when I said I had no problems with Evolution. Today I modified a reoccurring event and it froze. I had to reopen the offending diary in KOrganiser and disconnect the events to make it work again.

It sure would be nice to see a fix for this problem as it appears more
than a few are experiencing the same issue.

Yes, thanks for the reply Patrick. I too would just as soon not learn
new tricks. That's for my dog to try. <g> (new tricks that is)
