Searching contacts problems!

When attempting to search contacts, the list refreshes, then the search box clears and nothing is found (I assume because the search box is now cleared). Happens no matter which search option I use i.e. Name begins with..., Any field contains...
Thanks for any help you can give me to solve this vexing problem.
