Evolution will not send emails

Asked by Meigs

Binary package hint: evolution

I am running Intrepid, using Evolution as my email client. In the past I have had good luck with it, but now I can't get it to send my messages. It just sits in the outbox and when I click on the send/receive button, it receives but still won't send the message. I have the smtp configured properly so I am not sure what else it could be.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

I believe that is more of an opinion. I am simply looking for a way to get Evolution to send my emails. I don't believe not sending emails is a product feature.

If Evolution has worked in the past then what has changed? Have you changed ISP? Does your ISP specify a "send" port?

I just reimaged my system. I have the same ISP, no send port. Nothing I am aware of has changed except for me reimaging my system, but if it worked before and I installed it the same way, I don't see why that would be the problem.

By "reimage", do you mean "re-install"?

Then it must be an Evolution configuration issue.

In Evolution go to Edit, Preferences, click on your account to highlight it and then click on the Edit button.
In the "Receiving" tab, the "username" should be your whole email address. In the "sending" tab, there are only two requirements: Server Type = SMTP and the Server = server mail address (typically mail.server.net or smtp.server.net).

May i suggest you to try with Thunderbird as mail client

Thunderbird: mail/news client with RSS and integrated spam filter support
Thunderbird is a lightweight mail/news/RSS client, based on the Mozilla suite.
It supports different mail accounts (POP, IMAP, Gmail), has an integrated learning Spam filter, and offers easy organization of mails with tagging and virtual folders. Also, more features can be added by installing extensions.

To install Thunderbird simply search select and add it to your system using the System→Add/remove menu item

To install Thunderbird using terminal

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install thunderbird

You will find Thunderbird into Applications→Internet menu

Hope this helps

You know, I do think I am just going to give up on Evolution. I had good luck with Thunderbird when I was running a MS platform. I was hoping to come up with a resolution to the actual problem, but this will work. I will keep trying to figure it out on my own. Thanks for the input, guys.
