Ubuntu 8.10: a user changed their Ubuntu login password and now Evolution asks for a password for the default keyring. I had the same issue in Ubuntu 8.04 and found directions for fixing it but the directions don't work for 8.10. I tried changing and deleting the password in "Applications" "Accesories" "Passwords and Encryption Keys" but that doesn't solve it.

The other clue is that Evolution only accepts the old Ubuntu login password when it asks for the password to unlock the default keyring.

Thank you,
Dennis

Try this:
Following the procedure you have already outlined, when you change the password, enter the password that works but leave the entry for "New password" blank. The system will ask "Store new password unencrypted?" - click on "Use unsafe storage".
That should fix it.

Thanks Andre,
When you say "change the password", are you talking about at the Ubuntu login or when Evolution asks for the password to unlock the default keyring?

In System, Preferences, Encryption and Keyrings, Password Keyring click on whatever is in the main screen (either default or login) and then click on "Change unlock password". Then follow the procedure outlined above.
The password is your login password - Evolution does not have a separate password.

Hi Andre,
When I go to System, Preferences, Encryption and Keyrings, I don't see Password Keyring, default, nor login. My choices are Encryption and PGP Passphrases. Neither of those two choices seems to have anything to do with keyrings. I noticed this change when I updated to Ubuntu 8.10.

Just to confuse the unwary, the items we want have been moved (I run Hardy Heron but have Intrepid Ibex in VirtualBox).

So, you must follow a different path, Dennis: Applications, Accessories, Passwords and Encryption Keys. Then click on Edit and then on Preferences.

Hi Andre,
Just so you know, I tried 3 things in Applications, Accessories, Passwords and Encryption Keys:
1) I deleted the password key for Evolution
2) I changed the password for the Evolution key to the email password
3) I changed the password for the Evolution key to the old login password

What I have figured out is that the dialogue box that comes up in Evolution still wants the old Ubuntu login password to unlock the key ring. The Evolution key ring in Applications, Accessories, Passwords and Encryption Keys wants the email password.

The password issue does tend to give rise to some confusion.

Some people do not like to log into Ubuntu with a password and they tick the box in Login Window (System, Administration, Login Window, Security) that allows them automatic login. That can cause Evolution to ask for a password.

Perhaps that is your solution.

Passwords are easily read by a double click on the password entry. If you have made changes there then you might have to redo any email accounts.

Hello Andre,
I checked the Login Window Preferences and verified that "Enable Automatic Login" isn't checked.

I would change the password back to the original.
Which method was used to change the password? The best way is to use the command line interpreter and type in passwd.
Then see if everything works again before trying to alter the password once more.

I am not very familiar with the how the key rings work or why I am getting prompts for passwords. The problem I am having seems related and I would be grateful for a solution.

I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 yesterday and that is when this problem started.

When I ssh out of my network to another network I get an "Unlock Login Keyring" dialogue prompting me to "Enter login password to unlock keyring". If I click on the "Deny" button then all is well. I only get this dialogue once per login session even if I ssh again. I do not have this problem if I login through a text based console. How can I set a default somewhere to stop the keyring password dialogue?

Forgive me if I am restating an earlier question but I did not see a solution for my problem in the responses.

Marc

Andre,
My user decided that they would rather type in the password everytime they go into Evolution email instead of changing back to the old password, so, I guess that I will leave this situation alone for now.

Marc,
I don't know what "ssh" means but I believe that the source of my problem is the same as yours. In my case, as well as yours, the password to unlock the key ring only needs to be entered the first time the program is opened up during a particular Ubuntu session. I think that what happened to me is that when we changed the Ubuntu login password, whatever software runs the default key ring didn't get updated with the new password.

Dennis and Marc,
The first time that you create a password the Keyring Manager will ask you if you would like to store this password and this storage again is protected by a password or rather a passphrase.
To avoid being "pestered" for passwords, you can simply go to your Home folder, press Ctrl+h to reveal all hidden files, go to .gnome2, then keyrings and delete the contents of the folder keyrings.
When asked if you want to set a password for the Keyring Manager leave the fields blank.

Hi Andre,
I tried your suggestion about deleting the contents of the keyrings folder and now Evolution stops asking for a password every time the user opens it up. We just had to tell Evolution the mail server password once.
Thank you very much,
Dennis

Andre,
I tried a variant on your solution, which worked. Yes, I had changed my login password, but I did that several sessions ago, and it did not cause any problems until I ran the online updates. As you suggested, I deleted the contents of the folder keyrings and reran Evolution. I did in fact set a password for the Keyring Manager (the same as my login password, probably unnecessarily) and ticked the box asking Ubuntu to remember it. On restarting my machine everything ran smoothly as before.
Thank you!
Charles.

I faced this problem after I changed my log-in password. After referring this discussion, I did the following:

Click-on Applications->Accessories->Passwords and Encryption Keys. Appears 'Passwords and Encryption Keys' box.

In 'Passwords and Encryption Keys' box click on Edit->Preferences.

Select 'login Automatically unlocked when user logs in'. Then click the button 'Change Unlock Password'. Provide the old password and the new password.

Now the evolution works fine as before.

Thank u all.
